Introduction: Where Art Meets Sustainability in the Colorado Rockies

There's nothing quite like the feeling of crossing something off your travel bucket list. When I first heard about Thomas Dambo's incredible troll sculptures, I knew I had to see one in person—and Isak Heartstone 2 in Breckenridge, Colorado, exceeded all expectations.

This massive recycled-wood giant is absolutely breathtaking. Standing over [insert height if known] feet tall, photos simply don't do it justice. The sculpture has become one of Breckenridge's most unique attractions, drawing visitors from around the world to experience this intersection of art, nature, and environmental activism.

What Makes Isak Heartstone 2 Special?

Built Entirely from Recycled Materials

What makes this installation even more remarkable is that Isak Heartstone 2 was constructed entirely from recycled materials—scrap wood, old pallets, and downed branches all sourced locally from the Breckenridge area. This is Thomas Dambo's signature approach, and the Danish artist's talent for transformation is absolutely incredible.

The fact that he can take what others consider "trash" and transform it into this magnificent, towering piece of art demonstrates the power of creative vision and environmental responsibility. Each piece of reclaimed wood tells a story, and together they form a magical creature that seems to have emerged naturally from the Colorado landscape.

A Fairy Tale Setting in the Rocky Mountains

Standing beneath this massive troll, surrounded by the beautiful Colorado Rocky Mountains, I felt like I'd stepped straight into a fairy tale. The sculpture blends seamlessly with its natural surroundings, making it feel like Isak Heartstone 2 has always been part of the mountain landscape.

The Story of Isak Heartstone 1

I only wish I had seen Isak Heartstone 1 before it was relocated. Note: I've been told by another traveler that the original sculpture was moved rather than demolished, though I haven't been able to confirm this or determine its current location. If anyone has information about Isak Heartstone 1's whereabouts, I'd love to know!

The original installation reportedly faced challenges due to the overwhelming number of tourists visiting the residential area where it was located, leading to its removal or relocation.

Best Time to Visit: Off-Season Advantages

Once again, off-season travel has its perks! During my visit, there were only two other small groups of people at the troll, making it such a peaceful and magical experience. Visiting during shoulder seasons ( fall, October -mid-November or early spring, mid-March to mid-April) offers several advantages: Room rates during October are also cheaper during this time.

  • Fewer crowds for better photo opportunities
  • More intimate experience with the artwork
  • Easier parking and access
  • Quieter surroundings to appreciate the natural setting
