Come travel to San Antonio, Texas, with us for an unforgettable experience! Celebrating our 26th wedding anniversary, my husband and I embarked on an amazing road trip to this vibrant city. As a travel enthusiast, I couldn't think of a better place to explore than San Antonio Texas, with its beautiful River Walk and the iconic Alamo.
I have always loved visiting historical landmarks, and during our trip, I felt a special connection to both the Alamo and the River Walk. When you travel to San Antonio, Texas, these two attractions truly become must-see highlights that celebrate the rich culture and history of the area!
Parking
We parked in the garage by the bus station, which was one of the cheapest options available less than $10 for 3 hours. However, if I were traveling solo, I would have opted for a more expensive parking spot closer to downtown for safety reasons. As with any city, it's essential to be aware of your surroundings.
San Antonio Texas River Walk
You can take a riverboat ride along the San Antonio River. The guides are full of fascinating facts, sharing stories about the rich history of San Antonio as you glide along the water. They provide insights into the Alamo, as well as the museum and art galleries that line the banks of the River Walk.
The scenic views and informative commentary make for an unforgettable experience, allowing visitors to appreciate the beauty and significance of this historic area.
While wandering the River Walk, we could feel the festive spirit in the air, with markets and restaurants displaying colorful murals and vibrant umbrellas that added to the lively atmosphere.
Savoring Tex-Mex: A Culinary Adventure
Now, many would say that when in Texas, you have to indulge in some delicious Tex-Mex cuisine. Tex-Mex is a flavorful fusion of Texan and North American Mexican culinary traditions, featuring dishes such as enchiladas, tacos, and fajitas, often with a unique twist. The array of dining options on the River Walk was incredible, featuring everything from Mexican to Italian and seafood.
Travel Bucket List: Donut Delights
Our evening took a delightful turn when we stumbled across Voodoo Donuts, which had been on my travel bucket list for a while! I initially thought I would try it in Colorado, so imagine my excitement when my husband spotted it on our way down the street. We couldn't resist!
Charming Horse-Drawn Carriage Rides
The enchanting streets of San Antonio captivated us with the charm of a horse-drawn carriage gliding gracefully by. It felt like stepping into a fairy tale, with the gentle clip-clop of hooves echoing against the street. The holiday lights twinkled above, casting a warm glow that added a magical ambiance to the evening. If we had not been so hungry, we might have jumped on for a ride—still on my bucket list!
Bring your Own Drink & Save Money
Not feeling hungry, I enjoyed a Corona with lime and tahini around the top of the can. It was a cool way to have a beer! However, if I had known you could have open containers while walking down the River Walk, I would have brought a couple from our hotel room. It would have saved me about $3 per beer.

I snapped a picture of La Antorcha de la Amistad (Spanish for "The Torch of Friendship"), a monumental abstract sculpture created by Mexican sculptor Sebastián. This striking artwork is prominently installed in downtown San Antonio, Texas, and serves as a beautiful symbol of friendship and cultural connection.
Exploring the Alamo: A Historic Landmark
We made our way to the Alamo, a site rich in history. Did you know that the Alamo was originally a Spanish mission in the early 18th century, known as Mission San Antonio de Padua, and later became a military outpost and a pivotal battleground in the Texas Revolution? The compound featured a working village behind its walls and even housed the first hospital in the area. It was fascinating to see how much history has shaped the region.
My nerdy and historian side truly came out during our visit to the Alamo. my husband even joked, "How do you stay married for so long? You just take her to historical sites!" As we explored the grounds, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe at the stories that unfolded within those walls. Each corner of the Alamo seemed to whisper tales of bravery and sacrifice, reminding us of the rich tapestry of history that defines Texas.
Just imagine what it was like back in the day to live behind the compound's unique features. These elements offered a glimpse into life during that pivotal time. I could almost feel the weight of the lives lost during the battle that happened right under my feet, where over a thousand Texians and Mexican soldiers lost their lives.
It was incredible to see how much history has shaped the area and to envision the lives of those who fought for freedom. Our visit to the Alamo was not just a journey through history; it was a shared experience that deepened our connection to each other and to the past.
