Watching the recent news coverage of a Delta plane crash, where the aircraft ended up upside down, really resonated with me. It reminded me of the importance of knowing how to stay safe on a plane and brought back memories of my own flights, including one particularly memorable experience during an emergency landing when the plane lost an engine.

In this article, I will share personal insights and essential tips on how to stay safe on a plane, including the importance of listening to flight attendants, understanding air travel safety, and reflecting on some of my own memorable journeys. While incidents like this are rare, they serve as a powerful reminder of how crucial safety protocols and attentiveness are in ensuring a secure flying experience.

The Safety of Air Travel

Flying is one of the safest modes of transportation. In fact, the 2024 Transportation Statistics Report from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics identifies air travel as the absolute safest form of transportation. Transportation incidents for all modes claimed 44,546 lives in 2022, of which all but 2,032 involved highway motor. Statistically, the chances of being involved in a plane crash are extremely low. Modern aircraft are designed with numerous safety features and are subject to rigorous maintenance and inspections. Additionally, pilots and flight crews undergo extensive training to handle emergencies. However, it is crucial for passengers to do their part in maintaining safety during the flight.

A Lesson from My Dad

One of the most valuable pieces of advice my dad gave me before my first flight was to always locate the exit signs as soon as I board the plane. He emphasized that no matter how many flights you take, the first thing you should do is identify the nearest exits. It’s crucial to remember that the closest exit might be behind you. This simple practice can significantly enhance your safety awareness and preparedness in case of an emergency.

A Personal Experience: Engine Failure

I remember a flight coming home from London that had a layover in Minneapolis before heading to Denver, and it turned into an unforgettable experience. After that flight, it took me five years before I got on another plane.

Our flight had been delayed, and it was the first time I had experienced de-icing. It was a little scary if you’ve never encountered it before. The shaking of the plane as the chemicals were sprayed on made me double-check the exit row that was two seats behind me.

After our three-hour delay and icy takeoff, the flight crew celebrated with us. However, midway through our journey, just after the fasten seatbelt sign was turned off, the captain ordered the fasten seatbelt sign back on and instructed the flight attendants to return to their seats due to technical problems with the aircraft.

Big Problem

During this tense situation, we were instructed not to get up, and there was no drink service or access to the bathrooms. This experience reinforced my belief in the importance of being prepared. I always recommend bringing a bottle of water with you. Because of liquid restrictions, remember to fill it up after security and use the restroom before boarding.

After the captain announced that a storm made it unsafe to return to Minneapolis, we were diverted to Denver International Airport. You know you might have a serious problem when you see the flight attendants holding hands and praying quietly in the back of the aircraft. The tension in the cabin was palpable, but the crew’s professionalism and the safety measures in place provided reassurance.

The Importance of Listening to Flight Attendants

The passenger across from me, who had put on a pair of slippers before takeoff, was instructed to put her shoes back on. When the little old lady asked why, she was told it would make it easier to exit if we needed to make an emergency landing. During the flight, flight attendants are your primary source of safety information, so it’s essential to follow their instructions. They are trained to handle emergencies and ensure the well-being of all passengers. It’s vital to pay attention to their guidance, especially during safety briefings.

One critical aspect of safety is understanding the importance of leaving personal belongings behind during an emergency evacuation. It can be concerning to see passengers filming or carrying their backpacks and carry-ons off the plane. While it’s natural to want to capture the moment, prioritizing safety is crucial for everyone on board.

If you don’t listen to the flight attendants and attempt to retrieve your items, you not only put yourself at risk but also jeopardize the safety of others. I understand that personal belongings can feel important, but by slowing down the evacuation process, you may inadvertently hinder others from reaching safety. It’s essential to remember that every second counts during an emergency.

An efficient evacuation can save lives, and while your belongings can be replaced, lives cannot.

Personal Experience with Turbulence

I’ve experienced turbulence on flights, and it can be unsettling. However, it’s essential to remember that turbulence is a normal part of flying and is rarely dangerous. The key is to stay buckled in your seat when seated, as this can prevent injuries. Just like in the recent crash, where passengers were hanging upside down, being securely fastened in your seat can make a significant difference in preventing serious injuries during unexpected turbulence or emergencies.

Tips for Staying Safe While Flying

  • Buckle Up: Always wear your seatbelt when seated, even when the seatbelt sign is off. This simple action can save your life during turbulence or an emergency.
  • Follow Instructions: Pay close attention to the flight attendants’ safety demonstrations and follow their instructions throughout the flight.
  • Leave Belongings Behind: In the event of an emergency, prioritize your safety and evacuate promptly. Do not attempt to grab your belongings.
  • Stay Calm: In the event of turbulence or an unexpected situation, remain calm and trust the crew. They are trained to handle emergencies.
  • Stay Prepared: Bring a bottle of water and use the restroom before takeoff to avoid discomfort during the flight.
  • Know Your Exits: Always locate the exit signs as soon as you board. The nearest exit may be behind you.
  • Exit Row Guidelines: Don’t sit in an exit row unless you can perform the tasks of helping others evacuate.
  • Put Your Oxygen Mask on First: Always secure your own oxygen mask before assisting others. This ensures that you remain safe and can help those around you effectively.
  • Know Where Your Life Jacket Is: Familiarize yourself with the location of your life jacket and how to use it. This knowledge can be crucial in an emergency situation over water.
  • Stay Informed: Keep up with travel advisories and airline updates to stay informed about your flight and destination.

Final Thoughts on Flight Safety

Fortunately, we landed safely in Denver because our pilot was exceptional, demonstrating the training and skill that pilots possess. While incidents like the recent Delta plane crash remind us of the potential risks of flying, it’s essential to recognize that air travel remains one of the safest ways to get from one place to another. By understanding the importance of safety protocols, listening to flight attendants, staying buckled during turbulence, and remaining buckled until the plane reaches the gate, you can contribute to a safer flying experience for yourself and your fellow passengers.

I’m incredibly thankful that I overcame my initial fears of flying, as it would have been difficult to be a travel author who doesn’t fly. Since then, I have taken hundreds of trips and have never encountered any more emergency landing issues. This experience has taught me that while flying can be intimidating, it can also be incredibly rewarding.

Wishing you safe and enjoyable travels!
