Endless stretches of beach line the coastlines. Rare and endangered birds flit from branch to branch. Friendly locals smile and greet backpackers shopping for their next meal. Deep beneath the Arenal Volcano (Volcan Arenal), magma reaches a molten boil. Life goes on in this paradise nation much as it always has, while a glowing pacific sun slips underneath the watery horizon. Welcome to Costa Rica.
We’re Viva Purpose, publishers and authors who have devoted our careers to exploring Costa Rican culture and tradition, geography, and history. Here are our top travel destinations on this tropical paradise.
Arenal Volcano National Park (Volcan Arenal)
Rising over 5,437 feet above the coast, Volcan Arenal is a defining feature of Costa Rica’s landscape, and, up until 2010, was one of the country’s most active volcanoes. This volcano has since gone dormant but is surrounded by some of the country’s most ecologically and biologically diverse ecosystems. This national park alone has half of all Costa Rican birds, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals represented somewhere.
Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Preserve
Costa Rican books about travel and culture are quick to point out what a momentous opportunity it is to travel and see the Monteverde Cloud Forests. These forests are regularly shrouded in dense mists, resembling fog! Ecotourists in particular will be interested in the park’s biodiversity, and families will appreciate how easy it is to access this unique biological preserve.
Tamarindo and Tamarindo Beach
Tamarindo Beach is a wide, crescent-shaped beach bordering the town of Tamarindo. The beach runs for approximately one mile and is a favorite destination for outdoor enthusiasts, people seeking a fun night on the town, or professional surfers, as the area is renowned for its excellent surfing conditions.
The National Theater in San Jose
San Jose locals take immense pride in The National Theater, with many believing it to be one of the most beautiful buildings in the city itself. Its history is storied, with ties to coffee barons of the 19th century and imported European artisans who helped design and build the theater!
Costa Rica's culture and traditions are as rich as they are storied. There’s so much of this country left to explore — and if you’re interested in learning more, you can shop some of our international best sellers that expound upon the beautiful culture and traditions of Costa Rica.
